I LOVE these things.....
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll
I wear them around my waist and wrapped around buns to hang down my back in tribal costuming, however I understand that traditionally they are made to be braided into the hair and the tassel dangles from the end of the braid. How would you go about doing this the correct way? What are other traditonal uses for these? And is there an outlet or website that offers these inexpensively? Thank you so much for the help!!

Re: Question about hair tassel???
Thu, July 21, 2005 - 8:53 AMI have 2 braid extenders and I love them! However, I only have shoulder length hair so they are rather useless to me in my hair. I do hang them from the sides of my dancing belts though and the one has round metal parts on the end which chime when they hit eachother. Lovely light tinkering sound.
I'm with you Ajay... tassel belts shouldn't cost so much. Its wild! Tassels themselves are easy to make but then again, I guess not everyone is into doing things themselves. Although I'm currently short on money, I do love to look and drool over things. :)

Re: Question about hair tassel???
Thu, July 21, 2005 - 5:54 PMHi Ajay,
I'm not sure if this would work or not but the tassels may be made of Embroidery thread like DMC brand thread because it is a real glossy look. It would take more thread than woolen threads because it is thinner thread, but it may be a way to make the longer tassels with less looking bulk of wool or another type of synthetic.
Ideally, the thread that makes the chainelle fringe would be perfect for this, but I don't know of any manufacturer who would sell it.

Re: Question about hair tassel???
Fri, July 22, 2005 - 8:40 AMThe idea is to make the hair look longer because traditionally having a full head of long glossy black hair was the ultimate in beauty. I buy mine from the Hare Krishna temple in Los Angeles. When I used to dye my hair black I would add in the false braid about half way down so that my own hair had room to blend in and then the lower portion didnt look so fake. I wrapped the end with black thread. I tried clear rubber bands but it was too hard to get them over the tassle portion at the bottom. Bharatnyam dancers wear theirs hanging down the back ind tucked into their waistband. I started making my own when I changed hair color. I used burgundy thin yarn mixed with some embroidery thread and took the tassle off of a purchased extender. Works great.
