I have a large number of fabric remnants from salvaged silk sari's. I had the intention of someday making a quilt out of them. Most of these are silk fabric with the heavy metallic embroidery from the edge border or pallu of antique sari's. Can anyone tell me how to safely clean these fabrics without harming the fragile silk or discoloring the metal threadwork?
I'd like to clean up and press these pieces before putting them back into storage until I can get to sewing them.
Thank you,
Tracey

Re: Cleaning question
Fri, August 26, 2005 - 6:57 AMI have had people tell me to NEVER clean heavy zari or beadwork. Most dry cleaners will ruin it. Either make sure you've got a drycleaner who knows what they're doing (i.e. has LOTS of experience with desi clothes), or go the "don't sweat a lot and hang near cedar" route. -

Re: Cleaning question
Tue, August 30, 2005 - 6:59 AMur right andrea! in the west we cant dry clean saris with jari and zardosi/ beadwork. my wifes heavier saris (weddings/festival saris) are never even washed. she keeps the clean by not sweating a lot, not even eating in them ( a brahmana thing;) and never taking them into a dirty place (bathroom etc). and the lighter silk that have light jari and or beadwork/sequins. we handwash, then dry. and then we take them to the dry cleaners for a steam ;) hope this helps. -
